Ann Nancy makes experimental electronic, or art ho dance music for the eschatologist’s soul. Her self-released debut EP1 is a mutable body of songs for when the night is still young at the end of days, recorded when the artist hadn’t heard the club’s name in years. The six songs span hard style techno, Dean Hurley style ambient noise, goth rock, and jazz, her sound an onomatopoeia of midbrain alert that becomes a call to the dancefloor, in formation of forlorn hope. On the other side: paradise.

On the intro, what first sounds like an early morning alarm or intruder alert gives way to synths from a slasher OST. She samples her own voice on “Hummingbird,” named after the tiny experts of hypervigilance and torpor, channeling coos to catastrophe and back. “Sleep Paralysis Demon” crushes like the heat of the night till it's shapeless in the dark again. “Gully” is resilient as its synths scrape toward empty street daybreak. A breather comes with the sparse kicks, hand drums and cymbals on “Air,” before it moves monoliths and dimensions onto the dancefloor. Each track exorcizes the last, a cleansing at 130 BPM.

Ann Nancy’s music heals with forceful imagination, out of the shadows an opening for union between intervention and pleasure for itself. The most boring hellscape still demands visions of love. To end every night the same way wears you out, forces you to become resourceful, cut-throat in pursuit of something worth moving for, or to be moved by. Even if out of spite: Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think.
